I feel that the best scene of last nights Downton Abbey, an incredibly depressing and emotional episode, is the scene where Violet comes the day after the fact. For the first time in the show we truly see her as an old woman. She is usually so sharp and witty that sometimes you find yourself forgetting her age, she just looks, acts, and feels so young. But last night as she walks away from Cranston she looks old, frail, and weak. No child should have to bury their child, true, but no grandparent should have to bury their grandchild… that must be even worse. The scene was so well shot, so well acted, and so powerful that it alone should win Maggie Smith some form of award.
